This book, written in a poetic and enthralling style, gives a true account of the evil deeds of this noblewoman, product of mentally ill ancestors and inbreeding, in a country, Hungary, which at the end of the 16th century, was still in the dark ages.The story tells about trur fact, stripped of the legend which made countess Elisabeth a female Dracula, in search of eternal youth : as it is, the truth is more horrifying than legend. Due to her statue of a member of the royal family, the countess could do absolutely whatever she wanted ; she was a sadist and a lesbian, and in her solitary castle of Cestje, hundreds of young female peasants became her prey ; only when she began to attack noble women did legal action get started on her. A blood curling tale, which seems unreal, with the dark woods and sinister castle, ancient religion and witchcraft and devil worship, all the more impressive because it isn't fiction.
My main reason for purchasing this book was because of the upcoming American Horror Story season. A character played by Lady Gaga is going to be introduced and this is her. This book taught me a lot about the actual history of this person Elizabeth Bathory. While some of it was hard to read I enjoyed it very much and got everything I expected out of it.
As described. Fast ship. Would use again.
It has great history but hard to find it all through the poetry style in it.
Detailed account but written in a formal language that makes reading difficult and unpleasant. you have to skim for details amidst a lot of useless information
Enjoyed reading this book at times I felt like it lost my attention but pushing through I got pulled back into it.
